Growing Rockport Music announces new slate

ROCKPORT — Rockport Music has announced its upcoming 2011-12 season, and one notable trend that emerges from the organization's programming is the dynamic growth of audience.

After completing its first year at the Shalin Liu Performance Center, attendance was close to 25,000, officials say. In 2009-2010, attendance for the Rockport Chamber Music Festival and related events was pegged at 11,750.

"We are pleased that our audiences are growing, and that we are drawing from new areas, including Boston and the western suburbs," said Tony Beadle, executive director.

"At one time, we were primarily Cape Ann," he said, "but now it's about half of Cape Ann, and half from other sectors of the region."

In the upcoming season, the Classical Series will increase from six to seven programs and The Metropolitan Opera telecasts, broadcast live in HD, will include 11 productions from The Met's New York stage opera house from October through April.

Rockport Music will also offer its first Met Encores Series, presenting the telecasts of six operas from the 2010-2011 season, starting in September.

Jazz, world music and pop concerts, education outreach events and HD broadcasts from the National Theater will be announced later in the summer, organizers say.

The number of concerts and broadcast events from September 2010 to August 2011 will have been 136. The number for the upcoming season has not been determined but there appears to be a full slate.

"We can't predict exactly how many we will have since we will be adding events throughout the season," said Beadle.

"But the word is spreading among artists that the Shalin Liu is a great place to perform, and I think we'll have a very full season."

Classical and Met Encore tickets go on sale to the general public July 21. Individual classical tickets range from $19 to $58, with subscriptions starting at $208. Met Encore tickets may be purchased for $15 and $20.

Free tickets are available to youth 18 and under to classical concerts. Students 19 to 26 may purchase $12 tickets to all concerts. (HD Broadcasts and benefit concerts not included).

Met Opera: Live in HD 2011-2012 Season tickets go on sale to Met members on Aug. 19 and to the general public on Aug. 29. Individual tickets are available for $22 and $26. A subscription series for all 11 operas starts at $220.

Classical Series: Individual tickets prices range from $19 to $58. A seven-concert subscription package offers a savings of 10% off the full-ticket price and begins at $208. Tickets go on sale to the general public starting Thursday, July 21.
