Karate Kick-a-Thon raises $5,000

Recently, pupils at Mahaney's Uechi Karate Academy of Gloucester participated in a Kick-a-Thon to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

They raised more than $5,000 during the 2-hour Kick-a-Thon run by the school. Pupils kicked anywhere from 10 minutes to almost two hours. Additional money was raised by a raffle with more than 30 donated prizes, a bake sale and by selling hot dogs and popcorn at the event.

Muscular dystrophy is a disease in which muscles of the body get weaker and weaker and may slowly stop working.

The karate school owners, Deborah LaFrance and John Mahaney, said they have family who have been personally affected by this disease and wanted to help in finding a cure.
