Essex Police/Fire: Hit-and-run driver may have had medical problem

ESSEX — A driver who police say may have experienced a medical problem struck a car, talked to the other driver, and left the accident scene without leaving his name Thursday.

Police received a call from the driver of the vehicle that had been hit at 4:56 p.m.

The Main Street crash caused minor damage to the reporting party’s car. But he told police the offending driver seemed disoriented when he stopped, then left the scene without leaving his name or phone number.

Essex police released a description of the hit-and-run driver’s car and asked other departments to be on the lookout for it.

A state police trooper spotted the car, pulled the driver over, and the state police notified Essex police that it was believed the driver had a medical episode.

The car was towed and state police filed an immediate threat citation against the driver, essentially notifying the Registry of Motor Vehicles that the driver could be a threat to public safety if allowed behind the wheel. The Registry can immediately suspend the license of driver who receives such a citation.

A Story Street resident was served with a restraining order at 8:25 p.m. Thursday. The order had been filed out of state.

A vehicle belonging to a Forest Street resident was repossessed Friday at 8:23 a.m.
