---- — Police and firefighters responded to a fire alarm at Veterans Memorial School that had been activated by a science fair show project Wednesday about 9:49 a.m.

Police said a fog machine used to show lasers had set off the alarm, but there was no fire.

Police are investigating a copper wire theft, after a Marina Drive resident reported 60 pounds of the valuable material missing from his property Wednesday about 1:20 p.m. Police said the Marina Drive man reported that someone stole the wire, stored in a tote, overnight from his back yard.

The man told police he had visited a scrap metal yard and found the wire in the tote bag there. Workers at the yard provided police with a license plate number of the vehicle that dropped off the wire, so police now have a suspect.

Police said they arrested Deborah L. Pitts, 58, at her Friend Street home on a charge of domestic assault and battery Wednesday about 6:14 p.m.

Police reported illegal trash dumping to the Department of Public works Thursday about 1:36 a.m., after officers found rugs, a chair, filled trash bags, and other debris near a fire hydrant at the start of Hesperus Avenue.
