Essex Police/Fire: Man, 68, faces domestic assault charge

---- — ESSEX — A 68-year-old Essex man John Champie was arrested at his house on 36 Addison St. after police received reports of a domestic incident on Christmas Day at 9:12 p.m.

John Champie is charged with domestic assault and intimidating a witness.

Two people, one of them a child, were transported to Beverly Hospital after a driver near 77 Western Ave. went off the road and hit a utility pole on Christmas Day at 1:36 p.m.

Police said the accident is also under investigation. Fire Chief Daniel Doucette indicated that the driver’s and child’s injuries were minor.

Three cards addressed to the police station were received on Monday and police are now investigating where the cards came from. Police chief Peter Silva said the cards were not threatening, but their language did not make sense.

Silva added officers are currently investigating a person of interest.

A motorist came into the police station Monday at 3:13 p.m. reporting that the driver had struck a dog on Martin Street. Police investigated the incident, found that the dog was largely unharmed, and returned it to its owner.

A Story Street resident was transported to Beverly Hospital at 5:22 p.m. on Monday.

An Eastern Avenue burglar alarm was set off by error, at 6:18 p.m. on Monday.

On Tuesday at 1:16 a.m., a vehicle struck a utility pole on Harlow Street near Conomo Point Road. The incident may be been weather related, police are now investigation the accident.
