Chamber hosts Nobel laureate Tuesday

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — A 2010 Nobel Prize for Economics winner will offer his economic projections here tomorrow morning when he serves as guest speaker at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Forecast Breakfast at the Essex Room at Woodman’s in Essex.

Peter A. Diamond, a longtime Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor who was presented the Nobel Prize along with two-winners, Dale T. Mortensen of Northwestern University and Christopher A. Pissarides of the London School of Economics, will headline the Chamber breakfast program that is set for Tuesday, with check-in and networking time beginning tomorrow at 7 a.m. and the program running from 7:30 to 9 a.m. A story in Saturday’s Times had incorrectly indicated that the event was another day this week.

Diamond’s presentation is slated to focus on the ongoing fiscal and budgetary issues currently being deliberated by political leaders in Washington, including looming deadlines for raising the nation’s debt ceiling and dealing with deep cuts scheduled across the board in defense and non-defense spending.

In October, 2010, Professor Diamond and his co-winners were presented the Nobel Prize for “their analysis of markets with search frictions.” He was also nominated the same year by President Obama for a seat on the Federal Reserve Board, but his nomination, essentially blocked by congressional Republicans, was returned to the White House and he later withdrew his name from consideration.

The Economic Forecast Breakfast will also feature such regular highlights as the introduction of new Chamber members, special salutes, and the chance to connect with business colleagues and elected officials. Breakfast by Woodman’s is included.

Tickets are priced at $45 for Chamber members, and $50 for future members. Tickets may be reserved today by emailing or calling the Chamber office 978-283-1601.
