SALEM — A local charity has stepped forward to help the two young children whose throats were slashed in a violent attack last weekend.
The Salem Children's Charity has established a fund for Jamaal and Erica Goodwin, who have been at Children's Hospital Boston since last Sunday night.
Police have charged their mother, Tanicia Goodwin, 25, a Gloucester native, with assaulting her children and setting fire to the apartment.
Jamaal, 8, is a first-grader at Witchcraft Heights Elementary School. His sister, Erica, is 3.
They are in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.
"Just because of the uncertainty of their near future, I think the idea was that the charity can collect money on their behalf and then obviously have it available for the children as they need it," said Witchcraft Heights Principal Mark Higgins, the charity's treasurer.
Higgins said he has received dozens of offers of help.
"A lot of different community groups and individuals have reached out asking how can they help and what can they do for the kids," the principal said.
The Salem Children's Charity began more than a decade ago and has raised tens of thousands of dollars for low-income Salem schoolchildren and families at Christmas.
