Consultants lead new round of Conomo talks

ESSEX — The two community planning firms brought on board by the town will be kicking off a new round of workshops tonight regarding the future of Conomo Point.

Taintor & Associates Inc. and Community Investment Associates, both consulting services, will be facilitating a series of group discussions, with the first set for tonight from 7 to 9 at Essex Elementary School.

The session will be aimed at discussing options for use of the land north of Robbins Island Road. The town continues to lease roughly 100 lots on the north and south sections of the Conomo Point property.

Tonight's session is the first of three community meetings aimed at deciding how the town can best utilize the properties when the leases expire in 2011.

Town Meeting voted in 1999 not to renew the leases. Since then, articles have been brought up at past Town Meetings about future land use north of Robbins Island Road, but the Town Meeting vote remains in place.

Essex officials are encouraging residents to attend the meetings to learn more about the options on the table, and residents will have the opportunity to put forth their ideas of how best to use the waterfront property.

From these talks, the consultants will be seeking to prepare a preliminary draft list of possible uses for the northern properties of Conomo Point.

Ideas generated from this first public meeting will be included in draft plans and will be presented for public review to be discussed in the next two meetings scheduled for April and May.
