City hit by another rash of car thiefs

Gloucester Police/Fire

For the second time this week, Gloucester Police yesterday fielded a number of reported breaks into and thefts from parked cars.

At 6:47 p.m. Wednesday, a woman reported her wallet stolen from her vehicle. She had parked the vehicle downtown and taken her dog on a walk. When she returned, the wallet containing $200, two credit cards, and her license was gone.

Yesterday morning, two Decatur Street residents reported items stolen from their vehicles. At 10:11, a man said someone broke into his vehicle while it was parked in his driveway on Monday night or early Tuesday morning and stole his cell phone. At 12:19 yesterday afternoon, a woman told police her GPS and charger were stolen.

Meanwhile, an Old County Road woman called police Wednesday to report a suspicious person after learning of car breaks in the Witham Street area earlier this week.

She told police that a black man about 5-feet-8 tall and 160 pounds knocked on her door at 8 p.m. Tuesday and seemed surprised when someone answered the door. He asked her how to get "off the road," but she noted she didn't see any vehicles in the area.

In other police and fire reports:

A Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company employee reported a shopping cart and large rock had been left on the tracks in the area of the Gloucester Avenue bridge the past two nights. The train struck a shopping cart on Wednesday, and the Rockport bound train struck a large rock on Tuesday.

A BB pellet was fired at the front window of a woman's Prospect Street home yesterday morning. No one was injured. Police said there are no suspects at this time.

A New York man called police at 2:16 yesterday afternoon to report a hit-and-run accident. The man said he was traveling in Grant Circle when a black van with ladders on the roof entered the rotary from Washington Street and sideswiped his car. The contact cracked the man's passenger side mirror and window.

Police restored the peace between a mother and daughter who were arguing at a Maplewood Avenue residence at 7:39 p.m. Wednesday.

Police notified Comcast about a wire down on Essex Avenue yesterday morning.

Fire report

Police and Fire crews responded to a report of a garage fire at 392 Western Ave. Wednesday night.

Officials believe a 21-year-old resident accidently ignited the electrical discharge of combustible materials just before 7 p.m. The man sustained first-degree burns to the left side of his face and third-degree burns to his left ankle, but declined transport to the hospital.

Police closed a portion of the roadway in front of the home for a short period of time.

The Fire Department also extinguished a small fire in the back of a Waste Management truck at 7:21 a.m. yesterday. The truck was on Rogers Street at the time of the incident.

A Rackcliffe Street man was taken by ambulance to Addison Gilbert Hospital at 8:02 a.m. yesterday after he slipped on wet rocks.

Rescuers transported a 42-year-old Warren Street woman experiencing chest pain and a highly intoxicated homeless man from the Railroad Avenue Shaw's to Addison Gilbert Hospital Wednesday afternoon. The 49-year-old man, originally from New York, N.Y., requested to go to a detoxification facility, police said.
