The five semifinalists in the city's search for a new fire chief will go before the search committee this morning.
Gloucester's Fire Chief Search Committee will conduct the first public interview session in the City Hall auditorium today beginning at 9 a.m. and Monday afternoon starting at 4:30 p.m. The majority of the interviews, said search committee chairman and Personnel Director David Bain, will happen today.
The sessions are the last step in the search process before the committee forwards the names of anywhere from three to five finalists to Mayor Carolyn Kirk for the final signoff.
"We're looking to get a measure of the person," Bain said.
The committee, he said, is looking for a chief that works well with the community, addresses Gloucester's needs, runs the firefighting and rescue aspects of the department well and has good labor relations skills. Pretty standard requirements, Bain said.
Bain declined to release the names of the finalists. Acting Fire Chief Steve Aiello has confirmed, however, that he is in the running, while sources close to the search have said Deputy Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Miles Schlichte is also a finalist. The other four are from outside the department.
The five finalists, down by one from the initial list of six, were undergoing an assessment Friday, conducted by consultant Municipal Resources Inc.
