May showers, early flowers

Croci popped up in February, bulbs followed in March and April — all weeks ahead of time.

But the real surprise in Nature's show of colors this spring has been a rare early bloom of lilacs, which are a classic May treasure.

Lilacs all over Cape Ann popped out at least a week ahead of time in late April and are now in full bloom. Many seemed to relish their own treat Tuesday, taking in a soaking rain.
