Essex Police/Fire: Car heavily damaged in hit-and-run

ESSEX — A hit-and-run accident was reported in the parking lot of Richdale's on Main Street at 4:08 p.m. Tuesday.

According to police, a store employee saw a one-ton dump truck back into his car, smashing the rear windows and causing significant damage to the car. The incident is under investigation.

A smell of natural gas was reported in a John Wise Avenue home at 3:31 p.m. Tuesday.

The Fire Department responded and confirmed that the house was safe, but informed the gas company of the issue.

A fire alarm that sounded at 11:49 a.m. Wednesday on Martin Street turned out to be caused by smoke from burnt toast.

A crossbow was turned in to police at 10:42 a.m. Wednesday. The person who turned it in said it had recently been found in storage, and the person did not think it ought to be left in a place where it could be found by accident.
