Manchester Police/Fire


MANCHESTER — Nezihe Hewson, 21, of Vine Street in Beverly was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated around 5:17 a.m. Saturday after getting into an accident on Bridge Street.

She was unable to negotiate a corner and hit a fence, which caused the vehicle to roll over and brush a nearby house in the process, police said. At some point, she was ejected from the vehicle, according to police reports. No other cars were involved in the accident.

After being arrested, due to her condition, she was medevaced to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. She was released on Sunday afternoon, according to a Beth Israel spokeswoman. There were no other injuries and the Essex Fire Department was called in for station coverage. The car had to be towed from the scene.

The Fire Department responded to Smith's Point Road at 12:49 p.m. Sunday for a malfunctioning carbon monoxide detector activation. There were no readings found.

A Gloucester woman called Manchester Police at 3:04 p.m. Sunday to report that a metal piece of the School Street overpass had fallen and smashed her car's windshield while she was driving on Route 128. Manchester Police followed up with the Massachusetts of Department of Transportation.

At 6:30 p.m. Saturday, a call for medical aid came from University Lane but treatment and transport were refused.

The Fire Department responded to Summer Street at 4:54 p.m. Friday for a fire alarm activation on Newport Park. The alarm was triggered by smoke from cooking.

A small fire was reported at the Crosby's on Summer Street at 4:49 p.m. Friday. Although the Fire Department responded, no action was needed. Apparently, an employee put the fire out with a bucket of water.
