A Gloucester man who pleaded guilty to assaulting his fiancee and other charges — and who threatened to stab and shoot two Gloucester police officers — was dealt an 18-month jail sentence with six months to be served by Judge Joseph Jennings yesterday in Gloucester District Court.
Douglas C. Campbell Jr., of 61 Fernald St., was arrested Jan. 9 after police were called to his home for a domestic dispute. When police arrived, they learned Campbell had assaulted his fiancee in front of her daughters.
Campbell left the scene in an uninsured, unregistered vehicle with illegally attached plates, but was caught up to by police a short time later at his parents' house on Summer Street.
According to court documents, the woman told police he attempted to kick her in the face, but that she managed to back away enough to avoid being struck.
Before police entered Campbell's parents' home, Campbell reportedly called his fiancee threatening to kill her if she sought a restraining order. He also reportedly threatened to harm his fiancee's parents.
When officers Jeremiah Nicastro and Stephen Lamberis entered the home Campbell resisted arrest and was uncooperative. According to police reports, Campbell threatened to shoot Nicastro and to stab Lamberis with a knife. Campbell also started ripping off his shirt and saying they were going to engage in a boxing match.
Fearing for their safety — Campbell had said he had a knife, which was later found in his vehicle — police exited the home and called for back up. While police were outside, they heard a loud crashing sound toward the rear of the home and were soon engaged in a foot chase down Summer Street.
Campbell, 41, was charged with two counts of assault and battery, six counts of threatening to commit a crime, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, a license plate violation, operating an uninsured vehicle and operating an unregistered vehicle.
The operating an uninsured vehicle charge was continued without a finding for 21âÑ2 years and he was found responsible for driving an unregistered vehicle. The rest of his jail sentence was also suspended for 21âÑ2 years.
The judge also ordered Campbell to stay away from alcohol, submit to random screenings and to abide by the woman's restraining order.
