Kerry: New commerce head to meet Massachusetts fishermen

BOSTON (AP) — Newly-confirmed U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson plans to visit Massachusetts to hear the concerns of local fishermen.

Sen. John Kerry announced Monday that Bryson has reitirated his commitment to meet with fishermen, many of whom say they are being driven out of business under the current federal fisheries management system.

Kerry says Bryson, whose nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate last week, could visit Massachusetts early in December. The senator has suggested that Bryson put Gloucester on his itinerary.

Gov. Deval Patrick and members of the state's congressional delegation have asked the federal government to declare a federal economic disaster declaration for the New England fishing industry and revamp the current catch share system.

Kerry is also seeking federal money for a scientific review of the health of all New England fish stocks.
