Local events part of free Trails & Sails

Trails & Sails, the Essex County-wide celebration of the area’s cultural, historic and natural resources, is this weekend and next, and several events are taking place here in Gloucester.

All events are free to the public.

The Cape Pond Ice Company, which dates from 1848, will offer free Historic Icehouse Tours today, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m. A warm sweater or sweatshirt, and practical shoes (no flip-flops!) are recommended. The tours last 45 minutes to an hour, and includes archival film, a tour through the block ice manufacturing area and the 28-degree F icehouse where new ice sculptures are on display, and kids may indulge in a snow ball fight! The free tour program will be repeated again next weekend, Sept. 27 to 29. Further details and directions available at 978-283-0174 or coolestguys@capepondice.com.

Inn Magnolia on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m. will host a “Fungus Hunting Class” with Jef Taylor, who will lead a walk around Magnolia in search of fungi. Then on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. the inn will present “It’s Not a Weed: Food, Medicine and Magic of Wild Plants” with Iris Weaver. The inn’s “snocones” with homemade syrup will be served.

The Sargent House Museum at 49 Middle St. in Gloucester hosts two events Saturday. The first is from noon to 6 p.m. with historic children’s games and activities in the garden that bring Judith Sargent Murray’s story to life. Then from 6 to 8 p.m. during the block party, the North Shore Folklore Theatre Co. will perform two acts from Judith Sargent Murray’s 1795 play “The Medium” in the garden.
