A New Year's baby boy

As 2011 rode to a close, little Brady Matthew Desmond showed no sense of urgency for bursting into the world.

His mom, Katie Desmond of Gloucester, had gone into labor at 5:15 p.m. on her due date, Friday, Dec. 30. And contractions continued through Friday night and all through Saturday, until doctors eventually decided to do a Cesarean section.

But when little Brady was born at 3:03 a.m. Sunday, he not only represented the Katie and husband Dan Desmond's first child. He was also the first baby to be born in 2012 at Beverly Hospital.

Brady Matthew Desmond arrived at a healthy nine pounds, one ounce.

"It was a New Year's Eve to remember," said Katie, when reached Sunday at the hospital. "... It was all worth it in the end.

"(Brady) has been an angel," she said. "He's very well-mannered. If he gets upset, he has been relatively easy to coax. So far so good. He's been great."

Brady is also the grandchild of Jim and Betty Gomes of Boxford and Richard and Roberta Desmond of Salem. Also, Brady's 100 year-old great-grandmother, Catherine Desmond of Revere, visited the newborn and his parents at Beverly Hospital as well, according to hospital Community Relations Coordinator Tina Ketchopulos.

In addition to his grandparent and great-grandmother, Brady has a large number of cousins, aunts, uncles and extended family to welcome him into the New Year.

Beverly Hospital and the Desmonds weren't alone.

The first baby born at North Shore Medical Center Salem Hospital, Savanna Rose Harris, arrived at 2:19 a.m. to Ashley Buelow and Marcus Harris of Peabody — and also after her mom had spent more than 24 hours in labor as well.
