Town Talk: Essex plans Antique Appraisal Night

Did you ever wonder what that old clock of yours was worth? Or that bunch of coins in your dresser drawer?

The Essex Merchants Group and the Essex Elementary School PTO are combining forces for the fourth annual Antique Appraisal Night to be held at Periwinkles Restaurant, 74 Main St., in Essex on Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

A donation of $15 per person or $25 per couple will go to benefit both organizations and includes hors d’oeuvres, participation in wine tasting, and verbal valuations from some of the most experienced local experts in the antique trade.

Sara Maziarz of Commonwealth Wines will host the wine tasting, and appraising will be carried out by members from the Essex antique community: Michael March of Blackwood March Auctioneers, David Neligan of Neligan Antiques, Ed Howard of the Flying Dragon, Michael Bider of Bider’s Antiques Auctions & Appraisers, Robert Coviello of Main Street Antiques, Vincent Caravella of All Prints and Maps and Rick Grobe of the White Elephant Shop.

Coviello said that if an item is too big to carry, the owner can bring a photo for an appraiser to examine.

Debaters excel at Yale

With a year of rebuilding under the Manchester-Essex debate team’s belt, 14 debaters traveled to the Yale University Invitational Tournament in late September.

While all students showed progress from last year, Jacob Martz led the team with his performance, advancing to the semifinal session in the congressional debate category, said coach and Social Studies teacher Jen Coleman.

Other strong performances in congressional debate were given by junior Fiona Davis and sophomores Lucas Martz and Julia Whitten, while the public forum teams were led by seniors Nicole D’Ambrosio and Chloe Schwartz, who finished with a record of 3-3.
