Rockport Ramblings: Chess team comes up just short

Although the Rockport High School chess team made a valiant effort, Viking Chessmen were one win short of winning the league playoff match against Burlington High School on Wednesday.

The chessmen had a regular season record of 6-4, and the Vikings finished in second place in the Eastern division of the North Shore Interscholastic Chess League.

The Viking Chessmen then entered the league playoffs Wednesday against powerhouse Burlington, and the five matches went a long time. At the end of the afternoon, however, Rockport was just one win short of carrying the day. Winning games for Rockport were played by Liam McCarthy and Nate Allen.

Fireworks fundraiser

Roy Moore’s Fish Shack in downtown Rockport is having its first fund-raiser for this summer’s planned August fireworks off Granite Pier, and organizers are encouraging everyone to join them on Saturday, March 23, at the restaurant from 7 to 11 p.m.

Tickets will be available at the door for $20, which will entitle the guests to heavy appetizers, including clam chowder, a cash bar, and the live music of Rockport’s own A Train Orchestra throughout the evening.

For more information, call Susan at 978-546-9566. Anyone interested in donating can also send checks money to Rockport National Bank, Rockport Fireworks Fund, care of Marcia Budrow, 37 King St., Rockport MA 01966.
