Essex Police/Fire: Arching wires spark brief fire

Essex Police/Fire

ESSEX — Several wires on Island Road on Friday caused a brief branch fire, with arching wires reported to police and firefighters around 3 p.m.

National Grid was notified and responded to make repairs as a fire engine stood by.

At 3 p.m. on Thursday, a Prospect Street resident called to report a power outage there as well. Police said National Grid was notified and only one caller reported the outage. It was not clear there was any connection between the outage and the fire.

More wires were down on John Wise Lane at 2:11 p.m. on Friday. In that case, police notified Verizon, which also responded to the scene.

Tree branches were blocking a section of Harry Homans Drive on Thursday at 12:54 p.m. Police spoke to a tree removal company that was doing work in the area.

At 4:48 p.m., a false alarm was reported on Belcher Street. According to police, a phone company was working in the area and the alarms were accidentally set off.

Another false alarm was reported at 9 p.m. on Thursday; in that case, a Western Avenue resident accidentally phoned police on accident, police said.

Another alarm was sounded on Cogswell Court at 1:42 p.m. on Friday, but police found everything secure when they arrived.

At 2:40 p.m. on Friday, police received a phone call about a car backing into a fire hydrant on Harlow Street. Police said there was no serious damage, however, and the Department of Public Works was notified to examine the condition of the hydrant.
