It’s still four months to the date of The Open Door’s annual Empty Bowl fund-raising dinner, but artists at the Rockport Senior Center in the town’s Community House have already begin painting the bowls that will serve as the centerpieces for the annual event.
Wednesday’s bowl-painting session in Rockport will be the first of several held around Cape Ann in the coming weeks and months, all leading up to the benefit Empty Bowl Dinner in May.
The event, which spotlights the food and nutritional issues faced by the many families in need in Gloucester and across Cape Ann, offers diners a chance to eat from one of the hand-painted bowls — and then keep the bowl.
A number of bowls will be set aside for auction, with all proceeds going to benefit The Open Door food pantry and human services agency, which serves Rockport, as well as Gloucester, Manchester, Essex and Ipswich.
Last year’s Empty Bowl Dinner drew 934 people to Cruiseport Gloucester and raised $28,739, according to Open Door Executive Director Julie LaFontaine.
