Making their marks at Pathways

Children of all ages at Pathways for Children have made their marks on 290 white ceramic tiles that have been installed on a Pathways wall as a mosaic piece — including the babies, whose footprints were carefully pressed onto tiles with paint.

Titled “On the Path,” the mosaic wall is a gently curving path of colorful ceramic tiles against cheerful green rolling hills with a clear blue sky and bright sun.

It was designed by Rockport artist Eileen Mueller. She urged each child to “paint whatever you feel,” and wanted this piece to “reflect the uniqueness of each child on their path to the future.” The tiles, which were painted in 2012, are wildly different from each other in color, design and motif.

Children and adults could make comments about the installation on big pieces of paper taped to the adjoining walls and on an easel.

A Ysaye Barnwell quote also appears above the tiled pathway on a painted sunny sky:

“For each child that’s born,

A morning star rises

And sings to the universe

Who we are.”

The tiles, paint and glaze were donated by Eileen and Joe Mueller. Glazed! on Washington Street in Gloucester baked the finished tiles.
