GLOUCESTER — James F. Hiland, 30, of 200R Washington St., who had been charged with heroin possession and being present where heroin is kept as the result of a January police-controlled drug sale, was placed on pretrial probation until a court date next February.
Judge Joseph Jennings found Hiland guilty of being present where heroin is kept after Hiland pleaded guilty to that charge. Hiland was ordered to pay a $50 assessment on that charge and was ordered to remain drug and alcohol free. He will be subject to random drug and alcohol screenings during his probation.
John Thibeault of Willowood Road was arraigned in two separate cases Friday, facing charges of possessing Valium pills in one case and possession of clonazepam in another.
Thibeault, 21, pleaded guilty and was handed a year’s probation on the Valium charge that resulted from a Jan. 4 arrest. Thibeault also pleaded guilty on the charge of possessing clonazepam, which resulted from a Jan. 17 arrest.
On the combined charges, Thibeault was sentenced to one year in jail, with 37 days of that sentence to be served and deemed served, and the rest suspended. He was ordered to pay a $50 assessment and placed on probation until August 2014, during which time he is not to consume drugs or alcohol.
Judge Joseph Jennings decided at a Friday arraignment that a 47-year-old Newton Road woman who had been criminally cited in November on charges of driving an uninsured, unregistered vehicle while her license was suspended, admitted to sufficient facts in the case but he continued the case without a finding until August.
In the meantime, the woman, Francine A. Martin, was ordered to pay a $50 assessment and remains under administrative supervision until her August court date.
A charge of larceny of over $250 against a 27-year-old Gloucester man was dismissed at a pretrial hearing Friday.
Peter Luoni of 159 Washington St. faced the charge after he had been accused of stealing money from a purse that belonged to a woman he lived with and also of withdrawing money from the woman’s bank account with her automatic teller machine card, according to a police report. The woman told police Luoni was using the money to buy heroin, according to the report.
