ESSEX — Two residents called police Thursday to report being the targets of possible phone scams.
The first report was made at 3:48 p.m. The resident said a caller claiming to be from a security company needed to retrieve information off the resident's phone and the resident's bank account number.
The second report was made at 4:20 p.m. A suspicious call was made to the resident's workplace, requesting his cell phone number and personal information. When the resident answered his work phone, the caller hung up.
At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, police received a report about a car being driven erratically on Main Street. Police were unable to find the driver.
Later Thursday, three residents mis-dialed 911. The first call came at 4:49 p.m. from a Southern Avenue home and the caller hung up; police said there was no problem. At 7:27 p.m., a Pond Street homeowner mis-dialed and a third call was made by a Conomo Point homeowner at 7:45 p.m. Both told investigating officers there were no problems at their homes.
An alarm called police and firefighters to a Choate Street home at 5:54 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters determined the fire alarm was malfunctioning.
Firefighters were called out at 1:45 a.m. Friday after a police officer on patrol came across a small brush fire off Essex Reach Road. They extinguished the fire within six to eight minutes and returned to the station.
