Aiello, two outsiders pegged as finalists for fire chief

The names of current acting chief Steven Aiello and those of two candidates from outside Gloucester have been forwarded by the city's Fire Chief Search Committee to Mayor Carolyn Kirk as finalists to become the city's new permanent fire chief.

Aiello, Falmouth Deputy Fire Chief Glen Rogers, and Eric Smith, deputy chief of the Fire department in Westland, Mich., were forwarded on to Kirk today in a memo sent from City Personnel Director David Bain, who has headed up the search committee.

The names were chosen from a total of five semifinalists who had participated in public interview sessions nearly two weeks ago.

The naming of the finalists leaves out one in-house and one outside candidate who had been interviewed as a semifinalists. Those are Gloucester Deputy Chief Miles Schlichte, who has also headed the city's emergency management operations, and Tim McDaniel, a retired deputy chief of the Providence (R.I.) Fire Department.

Under the city's chief search ordinance, each of the three finalists is now to be interviewed by the mayor, who will then either choose the city's next chief or decline all three choices and force a new start to the process. The ordinance also calls for the chief's selection to be ratified by the City Council.

Gloucester has been without a permanent fire chief since March 2009, when Barry McKay stepped down. Phil Dench had serves as interim chief for nearly three years before he retired in February of this year, while Aiello has been serving a acting chief since that time.
