Summer Street house hit by nighttime fire

A two-alarm fire on the third floor of a Summer Street house Tuesday sent at least one person to Addison Gilbert Hospital.

Firefighters responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. to a report of a house fire at 36 Summer St., and crews who first arrived on the scene reported a “working fire,” with smoke and fire coming out of the rear of the third floor of the wood-frame house.

Initial reports also indicated that there was a person — reported later as a 15-year-old girl – trapped inside, but rescuers reported by 8:45 that they had been able to get everyone, including the girl, out of the building.

Her condition was unavailable as of press time, while another person at the scene was also being treated for smoke inhalation.

Though any actual fire was reported as “knocked down” by 8:50 p.m., crews at the scene continued to battle smoke and other issues, and called for reinforcements as of 9:15. Officials also called in the city’s fire inspector and a representative of the state fire marshal’s office.

The house is in a single-family home in a crowded neighborhood off Beacon Street, and firefighters shot down Granite Street as an access point while fire trucks and two ambulances rushed to the blaze.
