Homemade handbags to be auctioned off

Tonight a local company is auctioning off the results off a handbag design contest.

Again and Again, located at 195 East Main St., sponsored the contest which invited participants to design a handbag using naturally sustainable sail material. The contest ran during July and the deadline for submissions was Aug. 1.

Contestants picked up sail remnants at the store and used them to create a handbag "mock-up" or a "prototype," rather than a finished and refined product.

Again and Again received more than 30 entries. The store is holding a silent auction of the entries tonight, from 6 to 8. Door prizes will be given out, and light food and drink will be served.

All proceeds from the auction benefit the Gloucester and Rockport School Sailing Program.

Again and Again refashions old boat sails into various products including totes, pouches and grocery bags. Everything produced is completely recycled and due to the nature of sails, the products are nearly indestructible.

For those who want a more finished product, Again and Again is offering a discount tonight on its bags.

A panel of judges will judge the contest entries bags on a variety of factors, including creative vision, execution, and functionality. The designer of the submission with the highest combined score will be able to pick any bag he or she wants from the store.
