Town Talk: Essex sculptor unveiling work in Salem

Chris Williams, a metal sculptor from Essex, will play an important role in a dedication ceremony for Salem State’s new Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center today. At the beginning of the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Williams will unveil an 8-foot tall bronze statue of the school’s mascot — a Viking — which will stand tall at the building’s main entrance.

The event takes place at the university’s O’Keefe Sports Complex on Canal Street with tours of the fitness center at 3 p.m. and a ceremony following at 4 p.m.

Elementary school forums set

The Manchester Essex Regional School District has been engaging the community in conversations about the academic reconfiguration of the towns’ elementary schools. To share your voice, stop by community forums in both Manchester and Essex next week; residents of both towns can come to both public meetings. The times and locations are:

Manchester Memorial Elementary School, Nov. 6, 7 p.m.

Essex Elementary School, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.

It is crucial that residents’ voices be a part of this process, because the district vision must be collectively formed with students in mind and owned by each and every member of the community — parents, community members, teachers and administrators — working together.

For more information on the state of the elementary schools, visit the district website at mersd.org.

Citizen police academy taking applications

Want to know what the day-to-day activity is of a Manchester police officer? Now is your chance, as the Manchester Police Department is accepting applications for its citizen police academy, which starts Jan. 15.

The invitation is open to all Cape Ann residents. To qualify, you must not have been convicted of a felony within the past three years and must be at least 18 years old; the academy is free.
