GFD battles structure fire on Washington Street

Gloucester firefighters are battling a two-alarm fire in a mixed-use three-story building on Washington Street, just above the Prospect Street intersection.

The first responders to the scene at 91A Washington Street shortly after 7 p.m. reported smoke showing and a “working fire” at the site. Radio calls from the scene indicated that firefighters were venting the roof, and otherwise looking to contain flames that were visible from the outside.

Firefighters reportedly had the fire “knocked down” as of 7:45 p.m,, but extensive overhaul work is continuing and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. There are no reports of any injuries.

Gloucester crews have called in Rockport, Essex, Manchester and Ipswich fire companies for mutual aid, with a Rockport crew headed toward the scene and others manning the Gloucester stations while the city’s firefighters battle the blaze.

The building is a mixed-use residential and commercial structure that houses a newly opened business, Happy Dumplings, on the first floor, and is adjacent to Ed’s Mini-Mart at the corner of Washington and Prospect.
