Essex Police/Fire:Main Street woman gives in to National Grid scam

Essex Police/Fire

ESSEX — A Main Street woman paid out money to someone falsely claiming to be from National Grid, police said.

Police were notified about the incident Tuesday at 9:44 p.m.

Police said the scam involves someone claiming to be from National Grid and requesting payment over the phone. The customer is told to purchase a prepaid Visa or Mastercard and to call back to make the payment using the card.

This was the second call local police received about a false National Grid representative. Another person tried to get money Saturday at 11 a.m. from a restaurant on the Causeway.

Police as well as National Grid advise that anyone receiving any suspicious phone call about threatening to shut off electricity unless a payment is made through a Moneypak or Greendot card to call police at 978-768-6200 and National Grid directly.

A car accident that occurred at 3:30 p.m. yesterday closed Harlow Road for about 20 minutes. Police said a witness saw the accident and the car was lodged about 30 feet into the woods.

Police said no charges are being sought for the accident, but the female driver was transported to Beverly Hospital.

A Harry Homans Drive woman was transported to Beverly Hospital just before 4 p.m. Tuesday.
