Book Club celebrates equality

Rockport’s history is rich with the achievements of women. The website MassMoments.org points out that 200 women crusaded through Rockport in 1856, dumping out much of the alcohol in town, which resulted in the town remaining largely alcohol free to date.

To recognize these women, the Rockport History Book Club will be reading about women’s fight for equality from 1900 to today. One member is reading “A Woman’s Crusade: Alice Paul and the Battle for the Ballot.”

The club meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Rockport Public Library in the trustees room. Those wanting to discover what to read to learn more about this topic are invited to attend.

Seven apprentices and two instructors from The Apprenticeshop, a school for traditional boat building and seamanship in Rockland, Maine, set out last Sunday in a 30-foot open whaleboat on a voyage of 310 miles to the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut.

The first port of call was Portland, Maine. The whaleboat arrived in Rockport around 4 p.m. Friday and will be traveling through the Cape Cod Canal today.
