Gloucester Police/Fire: Lock your car

Lock your car, and avoid leaving valuables in view, even inside your car.

That’s what police advise, especially after a spike in car breaks over the weekend as city streets become crowded at Fiesta’s start.

Monday afternoon a man discovered nearly $400 worth of tools had been taken from an unsecured lock box on the back of his pickup truck. The man told police the tools were either taken Thursday afternoon when he parked at the intersection of Washington Street and Railroad Avenue or overnight into Friday morning when he left the truck parked around the corner, on Washington Street near Arcadia Court.

Police received five reports of cars on Sumner Avenue being raided by thieves on one night last weekend, and one report of a car break three miles away on Lynwood Avenue the same night. Many of the owners reported they had left the vehicles unlocked.

Items missing from the vehicles include change, keys, a flashlight, a GPS unit, a camera, credit cards, a driver’s license, $50 in gasoline gift cards, and at least $70 in cash.

Police found that one of the stolen credit cards was used at a CVS in Boston to purchase less than $5 of items.

A Gloucester ambulance transported a 17-year-old girl from a car crash on Route 128 to Addison Gilbert Hospital with non-life threatening injuries just after noon Tuesday.

State police said the crash, on the north side of the highway near the Crafts Road exit (Exit 12) involved two vehicles and that the 17-year-old girl’s vehicle was towed from the scene. The woman driving the other vehicle, a 58-year-old from Cambridge, was uninjured in the crash.

Police said they are not ruling out the possibility of ticketing the 17-year-old driver, but that the crash is still under investigation.
