---- — The award-winning staff of the Gloucester Daily Times has reeled in two more prizes.

Features editor Andrea Holbrook has been named designer of the Year and Cape Ann magazine has been chosen as Magazine of the Year amid a new round of national awards through the annual Best of CNHI contest, coordinated annually by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., parent company of the Times, The Eagle-Tribune of North Andover, The Salem News and the Daily News of Newburyport.

CNHI, based in Montgomery, Ala., is a leading publisher of community newspapers, websites and niche publications in the United States, serving more than 130 communities in 23 states. The annual Best of CNHI recognizes the individual and collective works of the company’s journalists.

Holbrook, who, among other duties, coordinates the Times’ features sections like Taste of the Times and The Catch arts and entertainment section while also serving as editor of Cape Ann magazine, won the company’s Designer of the Year award in the category for the company’s small daily newspapers. Journalists and publications competed in three categories – large dailies, small dailies, and weekly/non-daily.

Karen Andreas, regional publisher of The Times and its sister publications, said both awards are a testament to the quality of the journalism produced from the Gloucester newsroom.

“I am so proud of the Times staff, and Andrea (Holbrook) in particular. She has worked so hard over the years and is one of the best, well-rounded journalists on our staff,” Andreas said.

The award is the latest of several for Holbrook, who also won a first prize and two third-place honors for page design in the New England Newspapers and Publishers Association competition in February. That contest covers all New England newspapers in a variety of circulation categories.

“I’m especially glad that these awards rezognize not only Andrea’s work, but also the importance of page design, which is an important factor in our daily news presentation,” said Times’ Editor Ray Lamont. “Andrea and all of the design folks who work on the Times are important players on our news team, and an important part of our community coverage.”

The magazine of the year award for Cape Ann magazine is the first first-place award for Cape Ann in the five-year history of the quarterly publication. With Holbrook as editor, Cape Ann also regularly features work by familiar Times journalists such as writer Gail McCarthy, writer and Community Editor Joann Mackenzie, Times photo chief Allegra Boverman, and photo correspondents Desi Smith and Jim Vaiknoras. The current issue on newsstands features Rockport’s Motif No. 1.

The Times and Cape Ann awards were among several winning entries with the North of Boston Media Group — with The Eagle-Tribune of North Andover capturing CNHI’s “Newspaper of the Year” honor in the company’s largest circulation category.
