ESSEX — Emergency officials responded to the scene of a violent one-car crash on John Wise Avenue Wednesday afternoon.
A Saturn sedan left the roadway and flipped end-over-end before finally coming to rest in "scrub brush," said Sgt. Paul Francis.
The driver of the vehicle, a Gloucester man, was able to walk away from the wreck with no serious injuries, police said.
"I think what saved him was that he was belted in and the car landed in scrub brush rather than on the roadway," Francis said.
The only other occupant inside the vehicle, a dog, was thrown from the car through an open window. The canine landed in some nearby brush and was also reportedly unharmed.
Police directed traffic during the cleanup process, but no lane closures were necessary because the vehicle came to rest on the soft shoulder.
Police withheld the driver's name Wednesday because the crash was still under investigation.
"There are no charges as of yet, but they may be forthcoming," Francis said.
The totaled vehicle was towed from the scene by Tally's.
No further information was available Wednesday afternoon.
