Town Talk: Summerstage returns to Manchester

Throughout the years, Manchester Summerstage has gone through different names, but a production by any other name would still be as sweet.

This year marks the 21st consecutive year of Manchester Summerstage, but it has been around for about 40 years under different titles.

This year, nearly 70 students from the Manchester Essex Regional School District are putting on a production of “Anything Goes.” Rehearsals for the cast and crew started earlier this week and the students, ages nine to 18, have an extensive schedule before their first performance.

The first show is July 24 at 6 p.m. at Manchester Essex Regional High School theater. More showings are on July 25 at 6 p.m. and July 26 and 27 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available for sale one hour before each performance and are sold as reserved seating; adults can see the show for $10 and tickets for seniors and children younger than 12 are $6.

See ‘For the Year’ this year

Essex resident Devin Congdon is attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell next year, but he has plenty to look forward to before then. He is a member of the band For the Year, which is playing shows on Aug. 12 at the Middle East in Cambridge and July 27 in Lowell.

James returns to chapel

Brendan James, a Charleston, S.C.-based singer-songwriter, will return to Manchester’s Crowell Chapel on Monday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. to support his upcoming release, “Simplify.”

Having played Crowell Chapel back in March, James was enamored by the venue’s acoustic brilliance and the reception by local audiences.

Tickets are $20 and are available at: attendstar.com, or by calling 617-694-6892.

Essex ship arrives in Maine

Earlier this week, the Lewis H. Story arrived safely in Maine after traveling through heavy fog from its home port at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum. The Chebacco boat recreated the voyage from Gloucester to Mount Desert Island that was made in 1762 by Abraham Somes of Gloucester.
