Gloucester Police/Fire: Man given Narcan before taking him to hospital

A 33-year-old man, listed as homeless, was transported to Addison Gilbert Hospital Wednesday night about 8 p.m. after a woman discovered him on the ground outside the library with a hypodermic needle.

Police said the man had a fresh needle mark on his arm, and that the needle cap was on the bench he had apparently fallen from.

Police administered Nasal NARCAN to try to reverse the effect of drugs in the man’s system. Firefighters then administered additional doses both nasally and intravenously before transporting the man to the hospital.

Police also found a used empty hypodermic needle and an empty corner of a bag that was twisted at the top.

A man sleeping in a sleeping bag on the city-owned 1-4, C-2 lot on Rogers Street was told by police to leave Wednesday about 7 p.m. Police woke the man, checked his record for warrants, and, finding none, sent him on his way.

The limb of a fallen tree on Eastern Avenue broke through the windshield of a vehicle and caused damage to the hood of the car, as the driver did not see the downed tree until he struck it at about 1:43 a.m. Thursday.

Tally’s towed the man’s vehicle, and the Department of Public Works removed the tree from the roadway.

A custodian at the East Gloucester Elementary School reported vandalism to a storage unit located next to the school.

Police said the roof of the shed appeared to be “caved in” and dented, as if someone may have “climbed off the roof of the school and onto the shed.” Police are investigating.
