Talk of the Times: Changing of the guard at Mitch's grill

A longtime staple of the Gloucester night scene will be closed Sunday, and remain so for the next three days.

But patrons of the outgoing House of Mitch on Rogers Street shouldn’t fret. The shutdown will only clear the way for renovations and a grand reopening Thursday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m. — with new ownership and a new name to boot.

Mark and Jay Salah have acquired the establishment and will be reopening it Thursday under the name of Mitch’s Sports Bar and Grille, with food, music, prizes and a special guest fitting the new sports theme. The opening night will feature an appearance by former New England Patriot Jermaine Wiggins, the leading receiver on the 2001 Pats’ team who would go on to capture New England’s first-ever Super Bowl championship.

The new Mitch’s also plans to serve both lunch and dinner when it reopens.

Added time for Quarry Dance

There is an additional show for the Windhover Arts Center’s outdoor presentation of Quarry Dance 2 in Lanesville. Because of the weather, the show time Friday night was changed to a dress rehearsal, and a performance has been added for today at 11 a.m.

This performance is in addition to the one today at 5:30 p.m.

This is an outdoor site-specific dance piece, performed by members of the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre of New York City at the private Valley Pit Quarry located at 7 Leverett St. in Lanesville. For questions, call Windhover at 978-546-3611 or via email at: windhover@verizon.net; or visit www.windhover.org. The event is free with donations accepted.

Old Magnolia Day

Lanesville isn’t the only Gloucester village hosting a special event today.

The Old Magnolia Day celebration and Craft Fair is also on tap from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., when Lexington Avenue will be closed for traffic and allow shoppers plenty of space to stroll.
