Injuries 'non-life threatening' in motorcycle crash

A motorcyclist was injured and taken to Beverly Hospital Thursday night when his Harley Davidson struck the rear of pickup truck just outside the Grant Circle rotary on the northern side of Washington Street.

Police said they will issue a citation to the motorcycle driver, who was transported to Beverly with non-life threatening injuries after the 6 p.m. crash, for traveling at a “speed greater than reasonable.”

The 40-year-old Viking Street man who was riding the motorcycle was being treated for possible fractures Thursday evening. He also suffered injuries to both legs and his right arm. Police said he was in a lot of pain from the injuries and from road rash.

Police observed skid marks that spanned 75 feet of the motorcycle’s travel. Officers estimated that the motorcycle and its passenger slid for about 114 feet on its side after striking the truck. The man was found about six feet from the motorcycle.

Two witnesses told police that the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed. The truck driver told police he attempted to accelerate to move out of the motorcycle’s path, but was unable to escape the crash.

The 2009 black Harley Davidson was towed from the scene after the crash.
