Rockport Police/Fire: Sidewalk dirt bike rider eludes police

ROCKPORT — A youth riding an orange dirt bike led a police officer on a chase before disappearing into the woods off of Squam Hill Road at 12:56 p.m. Wednesday.

The bike was seen driving on the sidewalk on Main Street, but when the officer signalled to the rider to pull over, the rider sped away.

The officer managed to follow the rider for several streets, but eventually the rider was able to get into the woods past where the officer could not follow.

An erratic driver was reported on Eastern Avenue in Gloucester heading toward Rockport at 12:14 p.m. Wednesday, but a search of the area did not find the black Cadillac.

At 9:30 a.m. Thursday, a man reported that a thin layer of black substance was covering his car on Railroad Avenue, and that he suspected it was from the trains at the MBCR station.

A worker at the station said he thought the substance had come from the trees over the car.
