Polar Plunge today

The event is hosted by the Rockport and Gloucester Rotary clubs, and money raised from pledges on the plungers (swimmers) will benefit Rotary International's global effort to eradicate polio.

All participants are meeting at the Cape Ann Motor Inn at 11 a.m. for a photo, then plunging at 11:30 am sharp.

Father-son authors

Best-selling author Michael Palmer and his son Daniel will be the featured speakers on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m., in the Brenner Friends Room at Rockport Public Library.

Michael Palmer's 17th medical thriller, "Oath of Office," raises concerns about genetic modification, corporate farming and shoddy labeling throughout the food system. Inspiration for the book came from "Food, Inc.," a documentary about many unpleasant realities behind what we eat.

Daniel Palmer's latest book, "Helpless" received a starred review in Library Journal and has a waiting list in the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium.

His novels focus on people overcoming obstacles and feature the hidden dangers of commonly used technologies. "Helpless" explores the teen phenomenon of sexting and its devastating consequences.

When Bret Williams takes the stage at the Shalin Liu Performance Center on Friday, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m., with a pre-concert talk at 7 p.m.
