Gloucester driver, 77, slams state police cruiser on 128

A 77-year-old Gloucester driver slammed into a parked state trooper’s cruiser in a road detail site on Interstate 95/Route 128 in Waltham early this morning and was transported to an area hospital with what were reported as minor injuries.

Massachusetts State Police said the trooper was inside the struck vehicle but, and was slightly injured from the crash but did not require hospitalization. Police closed the roadway to traffic between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. following the crash.

According to police, the Gloucester man’s small black sedan crashed into the the rear of the state police K-9 cruiser. No dogs were injured during the accident, according to State Police Lieutenant Daniel Richard.

The K-9 cruiser had been parked next to another cruiser with the vehicles’ roof lights flashing, according to Richard. Richard said the vehicles had been blocking the two left travel lanes of Route 128 in Waltham near Exit 20 from traffic during construction, leaving at least one other lane open to traffic at the time of the accident, according to Richard.

Police have not released the name of the Gloucester driver, and are investigating the accident. No charges, however, had been filed as of noon.
