The buoys of Christmas

Gloucester’s Lobster Trap Christmas Tree, which will spring to life with its annual lighting ceremony outside the police station and courthouse Saturday at 4:45 p.m., is not only built with some of the classic tools of the city’s fishing and lobstering industries, but is also being decorated by children from each of the city’s five public elementary schools, along with those from Eastern Point Day School, the Gloucester Community Arts Charter School, St. Ann’s School and Faith Christian School.

Those students have taken turns this week painting the more than 300 fishermen’s buoys that will be placed on the tree prior to Saturday’s lighting program. And the Cape Ann Art Haven, which is coordinating the project, is welcoming residents of any and all ages to join in painting buoys, today from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Art Haven, located across Main Street from the tree.

The Lobster Trap Tree lighting will culminate in a busy Saturday in downtown Gloucester, with the annual Middle Street Walk slated to run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the seARTS Wearable Art benefit sale running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Saunders House at Sawyer Free Library.

The colorful Lobster Trap Tree buoys will also be auctioned off as part of an Art Haven fund-raiser planned for Jan. 19.
