Gloucester Police/Fire: Driver faces DUI after chase, circling tree

Gloucester Police/Fire

A 27-year-old Gloucester man was arrested on charges including drunken driving and failing to stop for police after he led police on a chase around the decorated Christmas tree on Western Avenue and on to his home on Bond Street.

According to police, Justin J. Bresnahan first caught a patrolling officer’s attention when he drove his vehicle over the curb on Western Avenue near Essex Avenue, then drove in a circle on the grass around the decorated Christmas tree in Kent Circle. Bresnahan then exited the grassy area and began driving in a southern direction on the northbound lane of Essex Avenue, before crossing back over Kent Circle to head toward Manchester on Western Avenue.

The police officer, pursuing Bresnahan with emergency lights and siren activated, estimated Bresnahan’s vehicle’s speed at 70 miles per hour in the 25 mile-per-hour zone.

Police continued chasing Bresnahan to his Bond Street driveway, where he parked then exited the vehicle, according to police. The officer then arrested Bresnahan as the man ran out into the street. According to the report, Bresnahan failed four field sobriety tests, but refused to take a Breathalyzer test at the station.

A 53-year-old Rockport man, first reported as a “suspicious person” crying inside his parked vehicle near the Gloucester Community Arts Charter School on Dory Road, was arrested for drunken driving when police found the man sleeping in the same vehicle with the engine running Wednesday about 10:29 a.m.

Donald R. Mason of Brooks Road was arrested after failing three sobriety tests, according to police. Police said officers found a half empty 200mL bottle of vodka in Mason’s center console and found two more completely emptied 200 mL bottles of vodka in the vehicle. Tally’s Towing removed the vehicle, police said.

A 28-year-old Maplewood Avenue man was arrested on a default warrant out of Lynn Wednesday about 9:06 p.m., after being reported as an unwanted guest at another Gloucester home.

Police said Richard T. Menicocci was arrested when police responded to the call for an unwanted guest, found Menicocci had a warrant for his arrest, then saw the man walking home from the residence.
