Man charged with DUI with 8-year-old in car

A 29-year-old Malden man, facing his second drunken-driving charge, is also accused of child endangerment after being arrested in Gloucester Friday for allegedly driving under the influence with an 8-year-old Gloucester child in his passenger seat.

According to police reports, officers arrested Michael D. Coveney after receiving two reports of an alleged erratic driver.

In one case, an employee at the Game Stop store in Gloucester Crossing first reported seeing a man who seemed intoxicated drive away from the store in a vehicle.

Another driver, about 7 p.m., reported seeing a vehicle with the same description driving without headlights and swerving in the roadway, sometimes driving on the wrong side of the road on Western Avenue, according to police.

Police tracked down the Magnolia address to which the vehicle is registered and found Coveney turning off the engine and exiting the vehicle at the Norman Avenue, according to police.

There, officers arrested Coveney about 7:37 p.m., after the suspect had failed a series of field sobriety tests, and conceded to police that he had been drinking “a few” rum and cokes.

The vehicle’s owner told police that Coveney had driven her 8-year-old grandson to the barber for a haircut earlier that evening, according to the report.
