Three-weekend fair starts Saturday

ROCKPORT — A rummage sale this Saturday will kick off the multiple-day Old Sloop Fair at the First Congregational Church of Rockport, 12 School St.

The fair, hosted by the handicap-accessible church, will span three July weekends this year.

Saturday’s rummage sale offers gently-used women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, bed linens, luggage, handbags, and much more.

The silent auction, white elephant items, art mart, bake sale and other goods will be sold Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20.

The giant yard sale is set for Saturday, July 27.

People travel from across the country to come to Rockport for the fair, said Old Sloop Fair organizer Geof Lyon.

“There are people who plan their entire vacations around this fair,” he said.

One of the more unique items being sold at the fair this year is an antique cash register.

The Old Sloop Fair has long been a popular Rockport summer attraction. It originated in 1957 under the guidance of the Rev. Ed Nutting. In the fair’s early years, School Street was closed to traffic, festive lighting was erected, and a live auction was held in the street.

Proceeds from this year’s fair will go toward the church’s operating expenses and the restoration and preservation of its buildings.

“It’s a good opportunity for the community to get together,” Lyon said.
