Fighting Domestic Violence

Recognizing what organizers say is the 12th year of a sustained community effort to recognize the issue of domestic violence, city and state officials and representatives of a wide range of service organizations teamed up Tuesday to renew their commitment to that effort at Gloucester’s police station.

In a city proclamation, Mayor Carolyn Kirk cited domestic violence as a “critical and ongoing public health issue in our city,” while adding that the partnership provided by HAWC — Healing Abuse, Working for Change — and the Gloucester Coalition for the Prevention of Domestic Abuse “continues to offer education, support, compassion and safety to residents who are experiencing violence in their homes and in their personal relationships.”

The event included displays of hand-crafted T-shirts from the Clothesline Project, aimed at encouraging victims of domestic violence to raise awareness of the issue and keep it in the spotlight.

Speakers included new city Police Chief Leonard Campanello, state Sen. Bruce Tarr, and Sunny Robinson — who co-chairs the Domestic Abuse Coalition with Jessie Ballantine of HAWC and Nicole Richon-Schoel, a psychotherapist for personal growth and served as Tuesday’s master of ceremonies.

Shirts from the Clothesline Project are on display at The Hive, the Gloucester Family Health Center, and at Pathways for Children.
