This Old House' back in Essex

ESSEX — The PBS series “This Old House” was on location at H.A. Burnham Boat Building and Design this past Monday morning, according to Jessica Hartzell, an account executive with WGBH National Marketing in Boston.

In an email to the Times, Hartzell said that Norm Abram and his production crew were taping a local side story at the Burnham boatyard to air as part of an episode. The production team covered what Hartzell described as “a walk around” the boatyard, a local landmark.

The yard has recently been the focus of national media coverage following the announcement that its owner, 11th-generation Essex shipbuilder and local folk hero Harold A. Burnham was one of nine recipients of 2012 National Endowment of the Arts National Heritage Fellowships — the nation’s highest honor in folk and traditional arts.

Hartzell also said that filming was nearing completion on another ongoing “This Old House” project begun last April in Essex.

The project, covered on its launch day by the Times, is the renovation and restoration of an “enchanted” vintage 1930s cottage and art studio built John Hays Hammond, eccentric builder-owner of Gloucester’s Hammond Castle, as a rural retreat for his artistic wife.

The cottage project, headed by North Shore resident Tom Silva, a 22-year veteran of the show and familiar on-air face to tens of millions of home-renovating enthusiasts across the nation, is due to air in January 2013.

The show is always looking for projects. Proposals may submitted to pickmyhouse@thisoldhouse.com or This Old House Project Proposals, P.O. Box 130, Concord, MA 01742. For more information, visit www.thisoldhouse.com.
