Police step up hunt for missing man

More than a week after a 35-year-old Gloucester man was last seen on Main Street, police say they believe he is alive and in the area.

Yet they have not been able to locate or contact him despite a desperate and active search.

Officers have been knocking on doors and making bursts of phone calls throughout the city looking for 35 year-old Keith O’Connor of 561 Essex Ave.

O’Connor’s mother reported him missing on Monday, and Gloucester’s Chief of Detectives Lt. Kathy Auld said the search picked up when police got a call from a woman who said she saw O’Connor at the Tedeschi’s on Washington Street. O’Connor’s disappearance was first reported in Wednesday’s Times.

“Now it’s like, let’s pound on doors because he might be here,” Auld said.

O’Connor’s family has put out a flier with his photo and description.

The man’s brother, Kevin O’Connor, said police have found a lot of dead ends. Yet each report, he said, gives the family some reassurance that O’Connor is still out there.

The latest call came from Beverly, where someone reported O’Connor was at the Beverly Train station.

“We believe he may be riding the rails,” said Kevin O’Connor. “It’s just good to know he’s all right, if it is him.”

O’Connor’s mother told officers he had disappeared on Monday. According to a police report, she said he was last seen near Papa Gino’s on Main Street Friday morning, and suggested he could be in Gloucester, Lynn, or Beverly.

O’Connor, who is white, is described as 5-foot-8 and weighing about 170 pounds, with short brown hair and brown eyes and an average bill. He was last seen wearing dark jeans, a white long-sleeve shirt with black stripes and red, white and black sneakers. He has a slight scar on his forehead and a cracked front tooth.

Police are asking residents who have information about O’Connor to call them at 978-283-1212 or O’Connor’s family at 978-283-0632
