Essex Police/Fire: Main Street business theft being probed

ESSEX — Police received a call from a business on Main Street at 7:13 p.m. Monday saying that there was a "problem" at the business, but without explaining the nature of the problem.

When police arrived, they found patrons in the store, but no employees. Police contacted the business owner and then left, believing all was well.

At 11:32 p.m. Monday, however, police received another call from the same business: an undetermined amount of money was stolen from the business. Police are investigating. Officers on Tuesday refused to identify the business.

A Wood Drive smoke detector went off intermittently starting at 1:18 p.m. Monday. The caretaker of the property was notified, but no further action was required.
