Gloucester Police/Fire: Girl, 6, steps on hypodermic needle

Gloucester Police/Fire

A 6-year-old girl who may have stepped on an exposed hypodermic needle at Niles Beach Wednesday about 4:44 p.m. was taken to Addison Gilbert Hospital by her mother, with officers following to help, according to police.

According to police, the girl told hospital staff that she had sat down to play in a small pile of seaweed, then felt a poke, “like a bee sting,” in her foot. Her mother discovered the exposed needle and brought her to the hospital for blood samples. Police forwarded a copy of the police report to the Department of Public Works.

A sunbathing man caused some alarm and police response Wednesday about 12:38 p.m., when officers received a report of a “man down in a front lawn” on Essex Avenue, according to police.

As one officer headed to the scene, another returning from detail determined that the man was just lying on the ground to soak up the sun, police said.

A Blynman Avenue woman found a small parakeet in the Veterans Memorial school parking lot and kept the bird overnight Wednesday, according to police. Police had not received any reports of missing birds, and advised the woman to call the animal control officer in the morning, according to police.
